How to Decorate with Ginger Jars + Where to Find Them

For over 15 years I've been collecting timeless ginger jars, inspired by my Mama's love for blue and white.  She loves the simple classics and has gifted me several ginger jars in our home, including a few shown here.  She and my Granny both filled their homes, and my childhood, with lovely shades of the dreamiest blues and white, which created such a lovely backdrop for all of the sweet memories they sowed into my heart over the years.
My Granny always had a remarkable way of repurposing items and using them with style and versatility in her home.  Even her daily vitamins and pills were nestled neatly within a cut glass salt cellar that had a permanent place on her kitchen table's lazy susan.  I try to remember this advice when I'm shopping for pieces to have a place in my own home, especially when it comes to accessories.  Timeless and classic, one of the best and most versatile accessories that I've found is the ginger jar.  They are popular for a reason!  Not only can they be styled in virtually countless ways, but they compliment both modern and classic decor which allows them to work wonderfully with any style.
Here are 5 of my favorite ways to incorporate ginger jars into a home:
1. Tablescapes:  Whether you opt to keep them empty with the lids on or fill them with flowers, ginger jars make a grand statement grouped together.  I have several ginger jars in varying heights and sizes grouped on our dining room table.  Use yours as a tablescape on entry tables or in the middle of a large kitchen island.
2.  Vignettes:  I love to mix ginger jars with artwork to complete a vignette.  The crisp blue and white acts as a neutral that can be paired with any hue.
3.  Vase Vessel:  Ginger jars make beautiful vessels for fresh flowers.  And they work equally as well for artificial arrangements.  I added a few orchids to a ginger jar cachepot I found and it serves as the perfect planter.  For fresh flowers, simply remove the top and add water.
4.  Stylish Storage:  Perfect for storing just about anything, ginger jars offer ample additional space. We often nestle seashells gathered at the beach over the years in our ginger jars.
5:  Bookshelf Styling:  A well-designed bookshelf can anchor a room and visually ground it, creating a sense of respite and calm.  We have a few chinoiserie pieces, including a ginger jar, on our living room bookshelf (and several white ginger jars on the bookshelves in my home office).  The mass and aesthetic weight of ginger jars provide that anchoring effect while also lending clean lines and visual interest.

Where to find Ginger Jars
Here are a few of my favorite places to shop for Ginger Jars:
  • Williams Sonoma has a variety of classic blue and white ginger jar options. This is one of my aunt's favorite places to shop for them and I love this blue and white chinoiserie bowl.
  • HomeGoods often has a selection of ginger jars. I enjoy "the hunt" and pop in  to see what unique finds can be discovered.
  • This handmade ceramic ginger jar with bamboo fretwork is similar to a set I have scattered throughout our home.
